Find out about Death Benefit Insurance

What is Death Benefit Insurance?

Death Benefit Insurance is designed to lighten the financial burden of bereavement. Payment will normally be made directly to the funeral undertaker or to the person who can provide evidence that they have paid the funeral expenses.

The amount of insurance benefit on the member’s death can vary from one Credit Union to another. The scheme period is from 1st January to 31st December and the benefit offered by St. Brigid’s Credit Union is €2,600.

In 2025, the cost for the year was €55, which is only €1.06 per week – a small price to pay to give you and your loved ones added peace of mind.

The benefit may be varied at a subsequent renewal date and any proposed amendment to the scheme benefit at a renewal date will be communicated in advance to members of the scheme.

You are eligible to join the scheme if at the date of application to join you meet the following criteria:

  1. you are a member of St. Brigid’s Credit Union, aged between 16 and 64, and the 1st premium is taken before age 65
  2. you are in good health, and
  3. you have completed and returned a scheme application form before commencement of the new scheme year.

Please Note: To join the scheme you must be under 65 years of age before the first years premium is deducted from your account.

Once you join the scheme and pay the necessary annual amount (which will be deducted from your account) you will continue to be a member of the scheme unless your membership ceases in one of the following ways:

  1. you inform us that you wish to opt out of the scheme from the next renewal date or
  2. the available balance held in your credit union account is insufficient to meet the annual cost of maintaining your membership of the scheme, or
  3. you cease to be a member of the credit union, or
  4. the credit union decides not to, or is unable to, renew the scheme at a renewal date and the scheme is therefore discontinued from that date.

Please note: your annual deduction in any year entitles you to be a member of the scheme for that year only.

In order for St. Brigid’s Credit Union to make a claim please provide us with a copy of the death certificate, date last in good health and a copy of the funeral invoice.

Please Note: Claims generally take 3-4 weeks to process.
